PassageMaker Sourcing Solutions -- an American-owned, China-based company -- didn’t just lend a hand to non-profit Global Family Philanthropy (GFP). PassageMaker lent them a chick.
Make that 1,000 of them -- plush toy chicks that GFP is selling in the US to raise funds for its “Chicks4Children” program, a sustainable campaign that builds community chicken coops in Haiti.
To support GFP’s cause, PassageMaker provided its service -- at no cost -- to produce 1,000 plush toy chicks. PassageMaker, a third-party provider, helped locate the supplier and orchestrate the production, quality inspections and safety testing of the “Chicks4Children” plush toy chicks for GFP.
Chicks4Children is a sustainable campaign with a goal to end hunger and poverty worldwide. Chicks4Children coop recipients commit to share the offspring and provide community outreach. The result is a plethora of eggs and chicken to raise, eat, share and sell. For more information on the program, go to chicks4children.org.
The plush toy chicks are being sold at chicks4children.org and at globalfamilyphilanthropy.org.
GFP friend eeko studio designed the Chicks4Children brand, website and the plush toys.

Our Global Family is growing — big time. Earlier this month, Lori and Jill were in Haiti to meet with representatives from several non-profit organizations as well as volunteer and activists working on the ground. Haiti is filled with foreigners working to make a better Haiti — medicine, education, sanitation, construction. The difficult part is, they don’t always work together. We’re trying to change that. The facility also trains Haitian engineers. Nurse Jessica Patti and Dr. Matt Spates gave us a tour of an area of Cité Soleil where they offer medical care to children. Cité Soleil is an notorious shanty town, densely populated and dangerous. We met some of the children and Dr. Spates checked on a prosthetic limb for a boy he’s been caring for.Our new friends braved the 4-hour drive to Les Cayes to tour our Global Family home and see ...
Our GFP family is growing — both in Haiti and in the US. Global Family was excited to bring three new volunteers on our October trip to Haiti. Brad and Mary are both teachers at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, and Jill is a Phoenix-based commercial photographer. Our new friends joined some familiar faces — Maria, Karen, Jo, Brit and Lori — on an adventure that carried us from Port au Prince to Les Cayes to Port Salut and to Il a Vache. Our new volunteers got to meet the wonderful Sister Flora and tour her orphanage on the ilsand of Il a Vache. Brad brought toys and clothing for the children. We hope to one day team-up with Sister Flora and support the wonderful work she does with orphans and handicapped children. When we arrived in Haiti, we heard about two boys — brothers — who were in need of a home. They had been in an orphange in Port au Prince. A former volunteer at the orphanage reached out to us through Facebook and asked if we could help. We met with Cleff and Marc Donald and spent a few days with the boys. They are around 11 or 13 ...

Just like Mr. Kevin McCaig, "Get Hooked on Haiti"Global Family Philanthropy would Love to help you get started!Just "Imagine" taking a Volunteer Trip with us; truly a Heartwarming experience!
SAINT JOHN - Kevin McCaig, a 48-year-old electrical apprenticeship instructor at New Brunswick Community College, had never considered doing relief work overseas. But after a recent trip to Haiti to help build an orphanage, he's hooked.
McCaig heard a radio report about a group fundraising for an orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti, since last year's devastating earthquake.
When he discovered they were looking for tradespeople, he realized he could help.
He covered his own costs for the trip, joining a small group of New Brunswick men who travelled to do the wiring, plumbing, septic and carpentry for the orphanage, a project of the Manna Care Foundation.
McCaig was struck by the graveness of the situation in Haiti, more than a year after the 7.0 magnitude quake destroyed buildings and left about 230,000 people dead.
"I had to stop taking photos," McCaig said, "It's unbelievable how many people are living in tents in the refugee camps."
It was the garbage and stench in the streets that surprised him the most about the Caribbean country. "It really assaults your senses when you ...

Pre-fabricated homes packed onto ship for Haiti

The homes being donated to Haiti. (Ian MacHattie)
A shipping container full of pre-fabricated homes is one step closer to embarking on a voyage from Nova Scotia to Haiti where they will be available to help Haiti's rebuilding effort.
The homes are going to Fond de Blanc, a town that wasn't extensively damaged by the earthquake and quickly filled with people who lost their homes. It's just under 100 kilometres away from Port-au-Prince.
Fond de Blanc had a population of about 5,000 prior to the January 2010 earthquake. That number has swelled to 60,000.
Now, officials in Haiti plan to to permanently expand the town and new homes are needed for that.
About $45,000 was raised by Friends of the Orphans Canada to buy the pre-made homes.
Organizer Ian MacHattie said the homes will be assembled in Haiti.
"They're a steel-arched dome — like in a semi-circle — with a fabric pulled tight over it," MacHattie said, explaining the ...
