Our Haiti

Haiti is a small island nation in the Caribbean, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Haiti is densely populated; prior to the 2010 earthquake the population exceeded 9 million. Unemployment is rampant at 80% and per capita income falls well below $1 a day. Other quick facts:

  • 54% of Haiti’s population is without clean drinking water.
  • 1-in-8 die before the age of 5.
  • 49% of the population is malnourished.
  • Fewer then 75% of children attend school.
  • There are about 300,000 child slaves.
  • Nearly 80% of the population lacks basic reading and writing skills.
  • Over 1 million abandoned/orphaned children.

Haiti’s challenges have grown following a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010. Humanitarian operations still struggle to coordinate effective relief to those in need.

With your help, this does not have to be a reality for the children in our Global Family.
